In an announcement today, LA’s Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a shift towards green technologies in its police fleet.

Fighting crime in Los Angeles officially just went green. According to Tesla Motors on their tweet earlier today (Sept. 11, 2015) Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced what Tesla Motors is calling, “A historic transition” to Green Energy Vehicles. And according to an official press release from the LAPD, more than 160 electric vehicles will be leased over time, “a move that will give Los Angeles the largest city-owned pure EV fleet in America.” Present at the event was a Tesla Model S P85 D and BMW i3 properly decked out in police livery. Congratulations Los Angeles. You’ve got the coolest police fleet in the world as far as we’re concerned. LA’s finest now have 691 HP and 864 lb-ft at their disposal! Check out all the social media rolling in below.

"The Los Angeles Police, Fire, General Services, and Water and Power departments will together lease the 160 BEVS. In addition, LADWP and the General Services Department will lease an additional 128 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles."

So from what we can gather it looks like the LAPD will conduct a study to see how feasible the Tesla Model S P85 D is as a police vehicle as well as the BMW i3 for street duty and will most likely iron out a lease deal with Tesla and BMW that will see our city and highway streets in Southern California patrolled and protected all powered by green technology. This bodes well for Tesla as if this deal works well, we’ll see other departments across the United States follow suit or at least use LA as a case study.
