The 2016 BMW 7-Series Debuts With More Tech And Sporting Credentials
By Paulo Acoba
BMW finally pulled the wraps off it’s 2016 BMW 7-Series Sedan today (June. 10, 2016) and it now weighs less than its predecessor but at the same time offers more technology and sporting credentials than ever before. The same day it was unveiled, production immediately began with no delays at its German plant in Dingolfing.
The new 7-Series will only be offered in Long Wheel Base here in North America. Measuring in at 206 inches long, 44 inches wide and 58 inches in height, the 2016 BMW 7 -series is the roomiest sedan that BMW has ever built. In front, BMW is really showcasing its Active Kidney Grills that opens and closes depending on how much cooling or lack of cooling that the 7 series needs. When it’s cold outside and running at low speeds, the grills will be shut to facilitate warm up and when cooling is needed, the grills will open. The side profile still has its characteristic Hofmeister kink with the handles flush with the body and the mirrors protruding organically out of the body. And I quote, “The exterior mirrors appear to grow organically out of the window frame.” Outback, you have a nice set of LED taillights with exhaust tips framed by chrome surrounds. And the M-Sport Package makes an appearance as well which means a front and rear lip kit, side valances, illuminated door sill plates and an exclusive anthracite colored headliner.
The transmission unit is an 8-speed Sport automatic which weighs less, has a wider ratio spread and has been optimized for efficiency. BMW has paired the 8-speed with navigation so it can better tailor its shift pattern and gear selection to how sporty you’ve set the driving mode depending on where you are on the map. In ECO PRO mode, the transmission decouples from the engine allowing for coasting between 30-100 mph.
Underneath the 7-Series is BMW’s exclusive air suspension paired with a double wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension. The 7-series can be raised two centimeters going over rough streets or dropped 1 cm automatically when traveling at high speeds. The Steering rack is now a variable steering rack that when paired to four-wheel steering and intelligent all-wheel drive increases maneuverability in city driving and at high speeds.
Then BMW goes into ALL the tech, safety and comfort features that are available on the new 7-Series.
