Help me Tom Cruise! Sorry, not even Tom Cruise could save this wrecked BMW i8

According to Wrecked Exotics on their post they dropped earlier over the weekend (June. 28, 2015) a brand new 2015 BMW i8 took a bit of a tumble and landed on its roof thanks to the deft and careful hands of an auto journalist somewhere in Mexico City, Mexico. If there’s one position you don’t want to land in a car with scissor-style doors, it’s definitely not on top of your roof as the doors have nowhere to open. Luckily for this auto journalist, the doors of the i8 had just the right amount of room to wiggle open so he could crawl out. This is one of the first production i8’s to make the round of journalists world wide and is now out of service indefinitely.

Looking at the photos, it’s hard to think that this BMw i8 will ever see the road again. With a special carbon fiber frame especially around the passenger compartment, the entire body is all but ruined. What’s probably salvageable will be the drive train, battery pack and rear electric motors as those mount below the body. Since the structural integrity of this i8 is damaged, even if it was somehow repaired, BMW wouldn’t probably put it back on the show circuit.

An unfortunate end for a brilliant car. With an MSRP of $137,495, the new i8 isn’t exactly cheap. If you were wondering, its powered by a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine up front paired to two electric motors in the rear for a combined 357 HP. The i8 is capable of a blast to 60 MPH in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 155 MPH all while getting 29 MPG on the highway. And whether or not that journalist still has his job is still up in the air.
