The Big One. Any crash usually involving five or more cars in NASCAR
The Coke Zero 400 was already rain delayed by more than 3 hours before finally getting underway and at the end of 160 laps at around 2AM and two crashes earlier on, Dale Earnhardt Jr. took his 25th win of his career and ran away with the checkered flag. What he didn’t realize until a few seconds later was that a crash of epic proportions was forming right behind him. The Coke Zero 400 ended with “The Big One” that saw Austin Dillon’s car get airborne and land on its roof. Check out the video below.
Earlier on in the race just on the second lap of the 400 mile race, David Gilliand barely nudged the number 15 car of Clint Bowyer sending Gilliand careening down the track that saw Greg Biffle, Danica Patrick, Sam Hornish and others wrecking right behind Gilliand. Then on lap 105, Kasey Khane made contact with Matt Kenseth setting off another large wreck that involved Sam Hornish Jr. Danica Patrick again, Jaime McMurray including many others.
Finally, at the end of the race, Austin Dillon’s car happened to grab some air after the wreck began to unfold sending his car right into the catch fence. Numerous cars were involved and surprisingly Dillion walked away from the whole thing unscathed. The same couldn’t be said for his car with the front and rear ends missing and his engine lying in the grass several feet away.
More than 13 people were examined and one was taken to the hospital where he/she was released soon after. Many people are applauding the catch fence design which did its job tremendously in preventing any serious injuries. The fence itself? Ya, they’ll probably have to replace that.
