Oh Lord Jesus it’s a fire

When it comes to bang for your buck for power adders, there is no better system to increase horsepower than adding a nitrous oxide kit. Along with all that added power does come some immediate and long-term dangers including damage to your engine due to a cheap kit being purchased or poor initial installation. This nitrous backfire video on this 2009 Ford Mustang Bullit is testament to those immediate dangers. Supposedly, this Mustang was street racing in “Mexico” against a Chevy Blazer when his nitrous system backfires resulting in fuel and nitrous spewing out of his system causing his engine to catch fire. Check out the video below.

The video starts out like any normal drag racing video with the requisite burnouts done by both vehicles. For the Mustang, this included priming his nitrous kit while the Blazer did his own burnout. The Blazer jumps out to an early lead, but all was for naught for the Mustang as an audible bang and explosion is seen underneath his hood. The rest of the video is full of expletives and what NOT to do in the event of a nitrous backfire. His friends try their best to beat down the flames with their shirts and one of the bystander’s girlfriend’s throws in a shirt by accident. Suddenly, the entire nitrous system starts spewing out. Add that with the fuel already emitting from the nozzle and you have a veritable fireball coming forth from the Mustang’s engine bay. No word on what happened to the poor Mustang, but it looks like everything got under control as the same Mustang was filmed racing by the same channel not three days later.

Commenters on the video did offer some words of sage advice. First, if you’re going to be running any type of nitrous, a fire extinguisher should be standard kit when you turn on the system. Next, you should never pop open the hood of a car when there are visible flames. Doing so will only feed the fire. Finally, proper installation and good hardware are all preventative measures that shouldn’t be cheaped out on if and when you do decide to use nitrous.
