Honda officially took the covers off its 2016 Honda Civic.

Earlier today ( Sept. 16, 2016) Honda officially took the wraps off its 2016 Honda Civic in Los Angeles at Youtube Space LA. Honda called this 10th generation Civic its most ambitious remake in its 43-year history and we agree. In addition, they’ve confirmed that the Honda Civic Type R is on its way as well!  (We speculate the Type R will be based off this 10th gen sedan, not the UK based Civic Type R and will be a no compromise barn stormer of a Civic worthy of they Type R badge.)

Two new engines for the 2016 Honda Civic are now available, while final power numbers were not confirmed they did say that the base four-cylinder would come with 15 more HP and the all new optional 1.5  turbo engine would receive 31 more HP compared to the old models. That means 158 HP and 174 HP respectively. MPG ratings are also rated to be above 40 MPG. In addition, Honda is aiming for the best crashing ratings from IIHS (that means a beefed up A-piller for that ever important small overlap test.)

"The 2016 Civic Sedan will feature two all-new, more powerful and fuel-efficient engines. Civic Sedan LX and EX trims will be powered by a 2.0-liter, 16-valve, DOHC i-VTEC™ 4-cylinder – the most powerful base engine ever offered on Civic – mated to either a 6-speed manual (LX trim) or continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Civic Sedans in EX-T, EX-L trims and Touring trims will be powered by a 1.5-liter, direct-injected and turbocharged 16-valve DOHC inline-4, mated to a unique CVT, delivering a new level of responsiveness in this capacity class of turbocharged engine. The new 1.5-liter powerplant is the first turbocharged engine on a U.S. Honda model and the most powerful engine ever offered on a non-Si Civic in America. Both engines will offer top-in-class performance and fuel efficiency, and are targeted to receive EPA highway fuel economy ratings in excess of 40 mpg. Additional powertrain details and specifications will be announced closer to launch."

The new Civic is sporty is well. Torsional rigidity is increased by 25 percent. In addition, aerodynamics have improved by 12 percent and the entire Civic body is 68 pounds lighter with new body-sealing techniques making this one of the most quiet Civics ever (58 percent reduction in cabin air leaks.) Drum brakes are gone as 4 wheel discs are standard.

The spy photos of an undisguised Honda Civic in Ann Arbor were spot on as Honda acknowledged the existence of them before pulling off the covers. Dimensions-wise, the new Civic is one inch lower, 1.2 inches longer at the wheelbase and two inches wider. The new exterior design is extremely taut and stylish. LED headlights, taillights, and exterior lights are all around and inside.

There are more details about the 2016 Honda Civic but we’ll let you read up on them thanks to the official press release.
