#14-1981 GMC P60 Value Van

Appeared in: Back to the Future I

The 1981 GMC P60 Value Van wasn’t actually a model of step van that GMC made but will get to that in a bit. Known in BTTF as Doc Brown’s Step Van we first encounter this mishmash of a vehicle unloading ( in a very dramatic fashion by the way) Doc’s time traveling DeLorean. Equipped with a unloading ramp at the back, a heavy duty suspension to take the weight of the DeLorean, two flood lamps up top and all the tools a time traveling scientist would need, it was the perfect vehicle to get the DeLorean to and from Twin Pine mall.

Keen-eyed GMC fans will recognize that Doc Brown’s truck uses a GMC Grill and has GMc logos on top of the back end and on the side. Those who have tried to identify the van agree somewhat that the underlying chassis is a GMC P60 Stepvan chassis. The P60 was available in 18′-24′ variants and was powered by a 366 or 427 cubic inch V8 engine. With around 400 HP and 460 lb-ft of torque, the 427’s at least had enough power to haul just around anything in the cavernous interior. Most commonly they were used as tool vans for tool salesmen or bread vans for bakeries amongst other jobs. Tough, rugged, and reliable, the P60 Step Van was the perfect choice for a day in and day out workhorse vehicle.
