#30- 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook

Appeared in: Back to the Future I

When Marty McFly first arrives in Hill Valley circa 1955,  Mr. Sandman is playing in the background and McFly has landed smack dab in the middle of what Universal hoped to portray as Anytown USA. One of the first cars McFly sees is this dark red 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook complete with white while tires pull up to a Texaco Service station for a fill-up.

And in a time-honored tradition you will never again see (in this country at least) four servicemen in full mechanics uniforms jump out and begin servicing the car from top to bottom. One mechanic checks the oil and all vital fluids, one checks the tire pressure, another cleans the windshield with a clean rag and the last guy tops her off with some gas. The practice immediately establishes the timeline for the video and clues Marty McFly into what time he actually is in. Oh, and the gas price was only 19.5 cents which is equivalent to about $1.73 today when you take inflation into account.

Fun Fact: Rumor has it that Plymouth named the Cranbrook after a street in Detroit (Cranbrook Drive.) Cars might have been named based on the proximity of certain streets near the Chrysler Corporation facilities.
