Ironically the vehicle that was once the official people transporter for peace and love in the 1960’s is now the vehicle of choice for Libyan nationalists. Informally known as the Volkswagen Bus, we first encounter this bread loaf (another nickname for the Volkswagen Station Wagon Type 2) at the Twin Pines Mall Parking Lot where Doc Brown and Marty have successfully pulled off their first attempt at time travel. All of a sudden, a gaggle of Libyan nationalists roll into the parking lot and with guns ablaze, shoot Doc Brown. It seems the large and expansive pop-off moon roof on top was perfect for someone to poke out of and shoot from. We imagine that given more time to make a better choice, the Libyan nationalists would’ve chosen a more appropriate terrorist vehicle (maybe an AMC Eagle.)
The model that these Libyan Nationalists choose to commandeer seems to be a USDM model as we can clearly see the NHTSA mandated side markers on the side. Both actors who played the Libyan Nationalists were both professional stunt drivers and careful planning had to be made to ensure both stunt performers survive the crash right when the DeLorean disappears.
