#22- 1935 Bentley 3.5 Litre Mark IV
Appeared in: From Russia With Love
A car phone in 1963 and in a classic Bentley at that, James Bond’s weekend car was not only sophisticated but quite high-tech for its time. We first catch a glimpse briefly of this one-of-a-kind Bentley while Bond is “reviewing an old case.”
While lying next to one Sylvia Trench, Bond gets a page from his jacket pocket and heads to the Bentley to get a call from one MoneyPenny. With an hour and a half to spare before heading back to HQ, Bond lowers the top down on the Bentley for what he calls, “a spot of lunch.”
Bentley’s, unlike what the films portray, have always had a special spot for James Bond amongst his list of cars. Ian Fleming, the novelist and creator of the series of books, had Bond driving around in a Bentley in Casino Royale, Moonraker, Thunderball and in Her Majesty’s Secret Service. According to John Pearson who penned Bond’s unofficial biography, the Bentley represented the best of Europe before the war. “‘everyone should have at least one folly in his life.’ The Bentley was quite clearly his.”
We see a second appearance of a Bentley in Never Say Never Again where Bond drives a 1937 Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Gurney Nutting 3-position- drophead coupe.
