#15-1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Appeared in: Diamonds Are Forever

After Bond escapes Whyte’s research laboratory after commandeering a moon buggy and Honda ATV, Tiffany Case and Bond drive to Las Vegas in Case’s red 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1. With James Bond at the wheel and police giving hot pursuit, Bond ends up ringing the Mustang through a serious of stunts that leaves Las Vegas PD trying their best to keep up. And with various V8’s stuffed in the Mach 1’s ranging from 302’s – 351’s, the police would be hardpressed to keep up anyhow.

The biggest stunt of the entire chase sequence saw Bond get the Mustang up on two wheels in an attempt to squeeze through a narrow alley. While the stunt in and of itself was pretty memorable, keen eyes watching quickly noticed that the Mustang entered the alley on the right side of its wheels and exited on the left side. An American team filmed half the stunt in Las Vegas and the other half in a back-lot studio in Europe with the stunt team only being able to use the right hand side wheels. The whole stunt was actually completed in Las Vegas, but on closer examination of the shot scenes, a police barrier with crowds watching ruined the shot and a retake was hastily done.

In total, eight Mustangs were used for filming and as far as we know, two still exist in private collections.
