#12- 1995 BMW Z3

Appeared in: GoldenEye

There was so much hype surrounding the BMW Z3 as Bond’s next car that fans of the film certainly had high hopes but were sorely disappointed when director Martin Campbell gave it nary a chase scene. We see this Z3 in only two scenes, once when Q introduces the Z3 with all its gadgets which include being bullet proofing, stinger missiles behind the headlights, all-points radar system, a self-destruct system and emergency parachute. And the other time it’s seen when Bond and Simona meet up with Jack Wade where Bond trades the Z3 for Wade’s plane.

Gear-heads are keen to point out that if Bond actually did use the Z3 for any serious motoring, he’d be hard-pressed to escape from any henchman. Underneath the hood of this Z3 was a 1.9 liter inline four that produced a paltry 140 HP. 0-60 MPH came and went in a sluggish 10.7 seconds in the automatic and 9.5 seconds in the manual.

The switch from Aston Martin to BMW for Eon Productions was cited as being one of the most successful product placements of the 90’s

"…the news coverage of Bond’s switch from Aston Martin to BMW “generated hundreds of millions of dollars of media exposure for the movie and all of its marketing partners.”"
