#36- 1965 Mercedes 250SE
Appeared in: Octopussy
Although not as flashy and full of gadgets as the other Bond cars, the 1965 Mercedes 250SE had quite the trick up its sleeve in its steel wheels. After Bond starts off a fracas at the train station and shoots one of the guards point blank, Bond jumps off the train car and into General Orlov’s nearby staff car, the Mercedes 250SE. As Bond whips the Merc’ around a corner Bond chucks the 250SE onto two wheels where the underbody happens to serve as a convenient shield from incoming bullets.
As luck would have it, Bond runs over a spike strip and all his tires are kaput. But not his wheels as Bond ingeniously uses the tireless Merc’ onto a nearby set of steel train tracks. Who knew that the ’65 Mercedes had steel wheels exactly the same size as train tracks.
Looks like the Soviet Union didn’t have much of a budget for staff cars as the 250SE was an entry level Mercedes. With a 2.5 liter straight six, the 250SE packed 150 HP and had the staff car hit a leisurely 0-60 MPH time of 12 seconds and an optimistic 120 MPH top speed.
