Earlier in the week when Subaru announced they would be ready to develop, produce and unveil a 3-row crossover in 2018 they were also very proud to announce that “Subaru is currently enjoying its seventh consecutive year of sales records and expects to close 2015 with over 550,000 sales, with sales tripling since 2007.”

Almost their entire lineup fits into that mold of reliable four-wheel drive vehicles that fits an active lifestyle. That includes the Forester, Impreza, WRX/STI, Legacy, Outback and Crosstrek. The only car that doesn’t fit into that mold is the BRZ which has been selling poorly when compared to the rest of the lineup.

Subaru isn’t ready to abandon this chassis quite yet and although they can’t throw AWD its way, they CAN throw in an STI model to bolster sales.

As a matter of fact, compared to last October in 2014 sales of BRZ’s are down 14 percent selling just 374 units compared to 435 units. If you look at the entire year, Subaru has only sold 4507 BRZ’s compared to last year with 6680 units.

An STI model would at least throw a couple more sales onto that record with nothing more than an engine swap ala EJ20 or FA20F (WRX STI engine.)

Next: Toyota and Subaru just filed a preliminary patent.
