1. Buy a Toyota or a Honda. Seriously

It goes without saying but not all cars are built to the exact same standards as another. Some car companies have built a solid reputation for themselves for being “bomb proof” reliable, a characteristic built on years of solid engineering practices that results in a vehicle that the consumer can rely on day in and day out.

The most recent independent study was done by iseecars to find out which vehicles people held onto for more than 10 years. Subsequently over those ten years, with the average American driving about 15,000 miles we can safely assume that a good chunk of these cars will see 200,000 miles or more in their lifetime. Out of 15 cars, nine of the 15 are Toyota models and five are Hondas. One is a Subaru. Here’s that list courtesy of ISeeCars.com.

If you want, there are similar studies out there that find out what the least reliable cars are out there. It would behoove you to avoid those cars if your goal is to have a reliable car for the long haul. Here’s a study done by Consumer reports.

So as long as you choose the right car off the bat and equip yourself with the right know-how and attitude, 200,000 miles and beyond should be well within your reach with minimal damage to your wallet.
