Watch A McLaren P1 Edge Out A Bugatti Veyron On An Airstrip
By Paulo Acoba
It’s not too often that these hypercars lineup next to each other in an all-out slugfest drag race, but earlier last year a McLaren P1 drag raced against a Bugatti Veyron. This is that footage.
The Bugatti Veyron’s claim to fame is its 250 MPH top speed and ability to hit 60 MPH in just 2.4 seconds. All those bragging rights were put to the ultimate test when a modern day rival in the form of a McLaren P1 lined up against this particular Bugatti Veyron on an abandoned airfield located in Coalinga, California earlier last year. Although this event took places months ago, no legit footage of the drag race between these two titans was seen…until now.
BayAreaRacing finally released the full video earlier this week. If you’re a betting man, the race is extremely close but does turn out the way most people expected it to. Check out that video below!
From a dead stand still, the Veyron would’ve enjoyed a slight advantage over the P1 due to having AWD as opposed to the P1’s RWD configuration. To eliminate this minute advantage, a rolling start at was used.
If you can’t wait 64 seconds for the race to begin, you can fast forward to 1:04 to see the rear matchup from the P1’s point of view. The P1 can hit 60 MPH in 2.5 seconds and that’s pretty evident in the first few seconds of the race as the Veyron jumps to a slight lead. From then on, the P1 just dominates over the Veyron, pulling away up to a maximum trap speed achieved of 176.8 MPH compared to the Veyron’s 172.2 MPH.

The curb weight of a Veyron sits at a portly 4,162 pounds while the P1 comes in considerably less at 3,441 pounds. Combine that with much better technology, wind-cheating active aerodynamics, and a quick-shifting DSG and it’s easy to see how the Veyron can’t catch up.
