Along with the Scion xB, the Scion xA made its debut back in 2003 for MY 2004. Priced at a very frugal $12,965, it was the cheapest Scion ever sold. Both the Scion xA and the Toyota Echo shared the same 1.5 L DOHC 1NZ-FE with 109 HP and 103 lb-ft. With an EPA-rated 32/38 mpg City/Highway, efficiency was one of the xA’s strong suits.

Reviewers were a little more kind to the xA in terms of power and ride quality. The ride was firm and handling was reasonable at best. What really impressed shoppers, as with most Scions, was the list of standard features that included antilock brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution, air condition, power windows, keyless entry, standard Pioneer sound system that was MP3 file and Satellite radio-ready.

Did you know…

  • 0-60 MPH takes 10.7 seconds. The quarter mile takes 17.4 seconds.
  • Both the Scion xA and xB had a couple of easter eggs in their head units. Through a sequence of button pushes, you could make your head unit display “Scion” in Japanese, create your own custom welcome screen amongst other cool tricks.
  • Scion xA had three limited releases.
    • 2005 xA RS 1.0- Available in Absolute Red. Standard equipment included a sports grille, rear spoiler, moon roof, 5 spoke alloys, color keyed ground effects and Vehicle stability control. 1,550 units made
    • 2005 xA RS 2.0- Available in Spectra Mica Blue. 1,770 units made.
    • 2006 xA RS 3.0- Available in Stingray Metallic light blue. 2,100 units made.
