#35- John Force Crashes Into Kenny Bernstein At The 2007 O’Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals

You don’t drive a funny car as much as you hang on for the ride. With 7,000 plus HP overcoming traction to blast you to a more than 370 MPH to cross the quarter mile in less than four seconds, there’s little room for error. No one knows this better than John Force.

In 2007, Force was facing his archrival Kenny Bernstein during the second round of eliminations at the O’Reilly NHRA Fall Nationals held in Ennis at the Texas Motorplex. After both cars crossed the finish line and deployed their chutes, things went awry for Force. His chassis broke in half and the engine and front two wheels went over into Kenny Bernstein’s lane.

When Force hit the wall, nothing was protecting his legs. Over the intercom Force told his crew chief that his legs were broken. Both Force and Bernstein were airlifted off the track to Baylor University Medical Center. Both Bernstein and Force received minor injuries and since then, Force has fully recovered.

In 2008, he returned to fight for the crown of being the oldest NHRA driver to win a championship but failed. Force tried and failed again in 2009. But in 2010, he snagged the overall driver’s championship and again in 2013.

Force fought hard to return to racing and that crash in 2007 only made him a stronger driver and an overall healthier person as how he lived his life thereon.
