#23- Alex Zanardi’s Tremendous 2001 Crash during the American Memorial

The race had already changed its name from the German 500 to the American Memorial after the horrific September 11 attacks so a giant gray pall was felt throughout the entire race. The crash that happened only drew a darker curtain over the somber mood. Race leader at the time, Alex Zanardi, suffered an immense crash on lap 123 that split his chassis in two and resulted in both of his legs becoming amputated.

On lap 122, Zanardi boxed for his final scheduled pit stop, and at that moment, was the race leader with 12 laps remaining. Upon leaving the pits, Zanardi lost control of his race car which turned sideway onto the circuit.

Alex Tagliani crashed into Zanardi’s car, splitting the chassis into two pieces. Both Tagliani and Zanardi were rushed to hospital where Tagliani was given a clean bill of health with Zanardi suffering an amputation and a cracked pelvis.

Despite the accident, there is no harder driver in the World Touring Car Championship then Alex Zanardi. The 49-year-old driver continues to race and race well. In his first season in WTCC, Zanardi secured a top spot on race 14 in Germany and has had multiple first place finishes since.

Today, Zanardi is one of the world’s best hand cyclists competing around the world.
