#14-  IIHS Crashing A 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air Into A 2009 Chevrolet Malibu.

Tasked with crashing cars into stuff for over 57 years for the greater good of automotive safety, in honor of their year of inception, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety did something quite special and eye opening. They took a pristine 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and crashed it head on into a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu to demonstrate how far car safety has come in the past 50 years. The results were shocking to say the least and can help even the most skeptical of persons to appreciate how far safety has come.

First, if you still believed that old wives tale that bigger older cars are safer just because they’re made out of heavier materials and are physically larger, you can throw that misconception out the window.

Since they only had one 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air to crash, a simple head on collision would suffice. Both cars had full-sized engines under the hood.

While the Chevrolet Malibu obviously suffered almost irreparable front end damage, the Chevrolet Bel Air suffered far worse. Without the beefier A-pillars and smartly engineered crumple zones, the entire front end of the car collapsed with major intrusion into the driver and passenger area.

The video was effective and inspires car manufacturers in an unending quest to continue to improve safety.
