#10- Tony Stewart’s Crash at the 2012 Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500
Say what you want about Nascar but no one is going to deny that the sport being a spectacle on some level makes people return for more racing year after year. The last two laps of the 2012 Good Sam Roadside Assistance sprint cup series race serves as evidence to that fact.
On the final restart of the race entering into turn three Matt Kenseth was leading the high lane of the track with the lead pack right behind his tail including one Tony Stewart. In turn four, Micheal Waltrip got bumped by Casey Mears and made a move on the inside of Stewart. Stewart responded by blocking but was turned sideways by Waltrip’s car. Waltrip ended up clipping Kevin Harvick’s car and subsequently the outside wall.
Over 25 cars were involved. Stewart’s car went airborne and landed upside down on top of several cars. Matt Kenseth surprisingly was one of the only ones who made it out to the front of the crash making it to the finish line winning the race followed by Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch.
Prior to this race, the catch fence at Talladega had been raised by a good ten feet and lengthened on certain parts of the track. Many fans were spared possibly injury thanks to the foresight and thinking of NASCAR officials in years prior.
