#43- Austin Dillon’s Wreck At The 2015 Coke Zero 400.
Crashing during a NASCAR race is inevitable for any driver but how big a crash usually defines certain crashes as “The Big One.” Austin Dillon’s crash at the 2015 Coke Zero 400 definitely ranks up there as a big one for several reasons.
During the last lap of the Coke Zero 400, many race car drivers were jockeying for position at the front of turn one when Jeff Gordon hit Austin Dillon’s car from the rear. With so many cars tightly packed and traveling at speeds in excess of 189 MPH, what followed was a domino effect of car carnage.
More than a dozen cars were wrecked including Austin Dillon’s car who went sideways and caught some serious air slamming into a fence with many of his car parts scattered into the crowd. Unfortunately, five fans were injured. Austin walked away with nothing more than a couple of bruises.
With so many smartphones filming from the stands, the impact of the collision showcased the real hero of the day ,the catch fence lining the track. Although destroyed and replaced, the catch fence caught Austin Dillon’s car and prevented large chunks of race car from entering the stands.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. ended up winning.
