Making the Ford Mustang in RHD and expanding the market to include China and Europe was a brilliant decision after all, as the Stang is now the best-selling sports car in the world.

The Ford Mustang was once limited to the American markets and some of those highly-lucrative international territories where cars came with the steering wheel on left. Things have changed in the past couple of years.

Now the Mustang is available in right-hand-drive too, thereby expanding the muscle car’s market to include many unexplored territories around the world. The decisions to add RHD to its portfolio and to go for a global launch have proven to the right ones as the Ford Mustang is now the best-selling sports car in the world.

Ford analysis of IHS Markit new vehicle registration data in the sports car segment has revealed the fact that in 2016 the carmaker sold more than 150,000 units of the Ford Mustang worldwide. 45,000 of them were sold in international territories and Ford is adding 6 more countries soon, adding to its current list of 140.

China and Germany lapped up a lot of Mustangs in the year gone by. Though the pony car was introduced in major international markets in 2015 itself, the car picked up traction in 2016, raking in enormous sales numbers. In China, sales shot up by 74 percent in 2016, compared to the numbers garnered in 2015. The total exports of the Stang from US to international markets which started in 2015 have crossed 98,000 units so far.
