You loved the BMW M4 CS, didn’t you? Well, the new M-powered performance coupe which made its debut at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show won’t be easy to get hold of. BMW isn’t planning to make a lot of these cars.

There is a sizable gap in between the Competition Package-equipped M4 and the hardcore, water-injected M4 GTS. It’s that big space which the 2018 BMW M4 CS fills in perfectly. Having made its debut at the recently-concluded Auto Shanghai 2017, the new fighter from the house of BMW M GmbH, has now made the M4 range broader and better-distributed. Now there is an M4 for every kind of performance driver who is in the BMW showroom for an M4 which matches his or her requirements.

The powertrain is familiar with the 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline, 6-cylinder unit resuming its duties under the hood. Power output is a highly-competent 454 hp and torque figure is at a potent 442 lb-ft. This one is bloody quick too with the needle covering the 0-60 mph curve in 3.8 seconds. Floor the pedal and things will get blurry at 174 mph.

Oh, so you are the Nürburgring nerd! A lap time of 7 minutes 38 seconds is solid for a car of its class. The skunkworks deep inside the bowels of BMW M GmbH have done their jobs well, tuning everything that has a role in making the M4 CS, quicker, sharper, smarter and more agile. A 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission case keeps the leash tight on the engine. Expect a lot of fireworks when this one is cut loose on a track.

But there is a catch here. Peter Quintus, BMW M’s Marketing Chief had a quick chat with CarBuzz during Auto Shanghai 2017 and that brought up the painful fact that the limited edition model’s production volume is quite less. 3000 to be precise and that too for the global market. And they haven’t decided on how many of those will be allotted for the US. Pricing for the US territory is also set to be revealed closer to the actual launch date.

Were you among those unfortunate souls who weren’t fast, lucky and rich enough to buy the M4 GTS? The new BMW M4 CS is your second chance.

Quintus also elaborated on how the success of the BMW M4 GTS led to the creation and launch of the BMW M4 CS.

"We were surprised by the demand for the M4 GTS. All 700 units were sold out within four weeks. For various reasons we couldn’t build anymore, but there was a clear business case for a more track-focused M4 to slot in above the M4 Competition and below the GTS. And that’s how the M4 CS came about."

And it won’t be long before the brand’s plan of having four tiers for each car is adopted by other models like the smaller M2 and the bigger M5. Quintus did give a tease of that by explaining the brand’s clear understanding of customer needs, with the M4 lineup as an example.

"Customers want a variety of different M models. The BMW M4 is an attractive proposition price wise, the Competition appeals to buyers wanting a bit more power and aggression, and the GTS is geared towards a niche audience of track day enthusiasts. The M4 CS slots in perfectly above the Competition and anyone who missed out on the GTS will want this car."

While BMW decides on how many cars should North America get in 2018, here is the official video of the BMW M4 CS to drool over. And it has skydivers, just in case the sight of the sharp-looking coupe charging down the track isn’t enough to satisfy you.
