The Porsche 918 Spyder is the second fastest car around the Nürburgring. But Porsche concluded the hypercar’s production run back in 2015. Which makes us wonder what in God’s name is the same car doing back on the legendary race track.

A Porsche 918 Spyder was spotted on the Nürburgring recently. The videos which have surfaced show the hypercar being driven hard around the track. Now that makes us wonder what’s the purpose of the whole drill. Porsche stopped making the 918 Spyder a couple of years ago and putting it back on the Ring with a driver pushing it to the limit has piqued the curiosity of many.

Road & Track contacted Porsche and received the statement that the carmaker is working on a new car and that the 918 Spyder has the job of being the reference point. What could that new car be? The manufacturer has been putting a couple of cars through the gruelling testing at the Ring these days. There is even a bonkers possibility of them working on a 918 successor.

Now that’s going to be one epic news to share if it turns out to be the truth. Until then, here are the facts and two fan theories to build on.
