Bumblebee Gets His Classic Alternate Mode
Now comes the icing on the cake. Transformers is going back to its strong roots with the spinoff, as the plot synopsis (as reported by THR) has confirmed that Bumblebee will be taking the form of a Volkswagen Beetle in his alternate mode. That’s straight off the original cartoon series that every Transformers fan had started with. Bumblebee’s Chevrolet Camaro may be cool in Michael Bay’s movies may be awesome. But the classic VW Bug has an altogether different level of appeal which the Camaro can’t match.
"The story is set in the year 1987, where Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug."

The Beetle had a cameo in the first Michael Bay Transformers film, in the scene where Sam and his dad go used-car shopping. That was a neat little Easter Egg for G1 fans to pick up.
