The racing version of the “Beast of the Green Hell” – the Mercedes-AMG GT4 – charged around the Nürburgring race track and growled for the cameras.

Mercedes-AMG is readying the racing version of the GT R for delivery to Customer Racing Teams by the end of the year. Named the Mercedes-AMG GT4, the race car is being extensively tested by its makers to make sure that the final version goes out to the teams with the perfect level of tuning.

To make that happen, the carmaker has teamed up with Mercedes-AMG Testteam Uwe Alzen Automotive and Mercedes-AMG Testteam BLACK FALCON to field two cars in the fifth leg of the 2017 VLN Championship.

Feedback from the teams will be instrumental in tweaking the car to meet the demands of the racing teams to which the cars will be eventually sold to. And for that reason itself, more race mileage has to be put on the clock before the delivery timekeeper starts ringing bells.

Stefan Wendl, head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing said,

"I am looking forward to the first test outing of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 at the Nordschleife in racing conditions. This is the next step in our comprehensive test and development programme. In the process, we are working together with long-standing partners and teams who are running our cars. Thus, we are not only collecting further technical insights, but also feedback from the various drivers which we can still incorporate into the car. Before we can deliver the first Mercedes-AMG GT4, we will carry out some more of these tests in racing conditions. Not only at the Nordschleife, but also internationally and with various teams."

More from Racing

Customer Racing Teams will receive the Mercedes-AMG GT4 cars by the end of 2017.

Both teams have been partnering with Mercedes-AMG Motorsport for years in GT3 racing, which made it a good choice to get them to assist with the race testing. The Mercedes-AMG GT4 cars will be fielded in the 6-hour race in SPX class with the sole intention of garnering as much data as possible. The teams and the company aren’t looking for wins or records here as that’s more of a target for later.

Here’s a quick glance at the specs of the Mercedes-AMG GT4. Its AMG 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine belts out 510 hp of power and up to 442 lb-ft of torque, with the mojo being directed to the rear wheels via a 6-speed AMG competition gearbox. Weighing 1,390 kg, the GT4 can go above 250 mph and is capable of a sub-4 second dash to 62 mph from standstill.
