Volvo revealed photos of their new V60 Hybrid today and oh my is it pretty. It has the makings to be an amazingly sensible midlife crisis purchase.

In most discussions and articles about midlife crisis vehicles, you will see the Corvette and Mustang plastered all over, rarely a Volvo.  Both are great performance bargains, however, I want to make the argument for a prancing moose.

The new 2019 V60 Hybrid is a wagon that is not necessarily in the conversation of many enthusiasts outside of a daily driver.  While not as powerful as an Audi RS6 Avant (which isn’t available in the US) or a Cadillac CTS-V wagon, the V60 Hybrid has the option for a whopping 390 hp.  This is directed to all four wheels which help with grip on all surfaces and conditions.

The power output is just one reason I feel this as a good midlife crisis car.

The Volvo V60 Hybrid is just 40 hp short of the quintessential midlife crisis Corvette C6, so we know it has plenty of go juice.  I want to use this next section to highlight what the C6 or Mustang cant do, these are the things that make this a truly great car for you when the “over the hill” party happens.

The most obvious is the design of the car itself, its a wagon.  I am an unashamed wagon lover, I wish we were offered more of them here in the USA.  This being a wagon makes it available to be your daily driver, no need to have a 3 car garage for a fun car and a family car.  You also avoid having payments and insurance for two cars if your midlife crisis car is also your daily.  This means you can option the car out better.

No AWD in the Corvette or Mustang

I also want to highlight the AWD system in this car.  It is very likely the AWD on the Volvo V60 will be a front-biased system with the rear wheels aiding as needed.  This does a couple things, makes it better in the snow and ups the fuel economy.  Some will say this cant be a performance car with front biased AWD, however, the average person is only going to feel the kick of the 390hp, I never said this is an enthusiast track car.  If you want to beat your daughter’s boyfriends Civic light to light though, this will do the job just fine.

Next: The Subaru Ascent has all of the cupholders!

All in all, the combination of practicality and also the power make this a great dual use car for performance and for safely packing the kids to hockey or birthdays.  See Volvo’s press release here for more info.
