Spring is coming and so are supercars!
By Andrew Hulse
Summer is finally around the corner here in the Midwest. The birds are chirping, sometimes. The sun is out, mostly. And sometimes the temperature goes above 45, in spurts.
Spring is around the corner, and for Midwesterners, this is the first time in a while many of us can do some car spotting. The sports cars and supercars are starting to come out of their winter hibernation in my area. Car shows and meetups are being planned. I have started to see supercars and collector cars driving around very tentatively.
The coming week of the weather here in the midwest has been a case study in the ups and downs.
- Monday- Rain turning into snow with 40 degree high.
- Tuesday-Snow turning back to rain with maybe some ice.
- Wednesday-Cloudy and 36.
- Thursday-Sunny now with a 40 degree high.
- Friday-Warming to 44
- Saturday-Rainy again and 50
- Sunday-Back to sun and 46
Even as I write this, there is a rain-snow mix coming down and I just watched a Maybach roll down the street.
All the temperatures here are highs, you cant forget there will be refreezing and ice patches at dusk and dawn. With the weather fluctuating as it has, it is a little funny seeing the owners of the supercars in my area take turns very very carefully. The tires have such a hard time gripping at these temps and the owners are rightfully worried.
So what is the point of this whole article? Other than pointing out it is almost Spring.
There is no news here unless you happen to live in my area and haven’t seen the weather yet. I really mainly want to convey how excited the car world that revolves around the midwestern US is to get their cars out. More of a small snippet into the life of a car person in the middle United States.
The question that goes through the minds of car lovers here every morning is “can I safely get X out?” The cold wet and sometimes icy pavement here makes for a sometimes harrowing ride even in my front wheel drive family hauler Volkswagen.

This is a great time of year to own an Audi R8 or Nissan GTR. The all-wheel-drive systems in these cars really help with driveability should the weather change suddenly. As it did this morning. So far today, I have seen rain, sun, snow and a mix of all 3.
