At $155,000, Volvo’s performance coupe appears to be premium on the pricing front as well…  will it do well based on exclusivity and looks?

We have recently seen Volvo opening pre-orders for its highly anticipated performance coupe, the Polestar1. But the carmaker had been keeping their eyes shut to the high demand for the car and have not been giving any clue as to how it would be priced until very recently. But not anymore!

The Beijing auto show finally sees Volvo’s performance wing, Polestar confirming the prices of the new Polestar1, and (as expected) it is not cheap by any means. The plug-in hybrid coupe is destined to be sold in the US for $155,000, while the European market would have it for 155,000 Euros.

Volvos on subscription

We have earlier stumbled upon news that Polestar would introduce a vehicle subscription system for its new plug-in hybrid performance coupe. While the carmaker has confirmed these to be true now, the details are hoped to emerge at a later date.  Subscription information is already available on other models, but no word yet on the Polestar1.

At $155000, the car seems priced almost equivalent to the BMW i8 and Acura NSX hybrid, but has to its credit, more horses on tap than both of them. The Polestar 1 comes with as much as 600 horses of power and an eye-popping range of over 90 miles! Also, just 500 copies of this car will ever be made, thus making it worth the spend.

Will this pricing strategy work?

But would the public be willing to spend as huge a sum as $155,000 on an electric machine when they can grab themselves something as cool as the Porsche 911 Turbo for almost the same price? If having 7000 people across 18 nations having placed deposits to pre-order the Polestar 1, can be taken for a ‘yes’, then we could greet the above question with a wide grin and a loud YES!

"Polestar’s CEO Thomas Ingenlath says: “We have seen a strong initial response from our first customers. This gives us confidence that our brand has a bright future. In 2019 already we will launch our next car, the Polestar 2 – a mid-sized fully-electric car which is well developed in its engineering phase. We will follow that up with the Polestar 3, a stunning electric SUV with a beautiful aerodynamic silhouette that is already advanced in its design phase.”"

Pre-production testing of the polestar 1 is scheduled to start by the end of this year and the deliveries are hoped to commence next year.
