BMW released some information regarding their upcoming i4, the brand’s first electric premium mid-range model, including battery size and power.

Another day, another new electric car. Today the news comes out of Munich where BMW released some details of its upcoming all-electric sedan (or Gran Coupé in Bimmer lingo). The i4 is the first from the brand in that category and it will be going into production sometime in 2021 and will hit markets later that year.

It’ll be similar to a 4-series in size and shape, hence its name, but the two models will differ in powertrains. Powering the i4 is an 80.0-kWh battery pack which will have an output of 523 horsepower. All that power will send it from 0 to 62 mph in 4.0 seconds and to a top speed that’s over 125 mph.  This is all a part of the fifth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology, which will debut in the iX3. The new technology helps the i4 achieve an impressive 373 miles of range.

BMW was also nice enough to release some pictures of their forthcoming electric sedan, however it’s heavily camouflaged. Although it’s tough to see, it looks like the car will have the large vertical grill that was seen on the Concept 4 as well as the i4 concept car. The headlights also seem heavily inspired by those on the M8.  Even under all the camo it’s evident that the i4 will be a departure from the radically futuristic design language of the i3 and i8.

Of course, the i4 won’t be BMW’s only electric sedan for long, as it’s just one of the 25 upcoming models from the company that’ll have electrified drive. But the i4 is by far BMW’s most significant product yet as it’ll be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model S, the undisputed champion of electric performance sedans. And as said themselves, “The heart of the BMW brand beats in the premium segment of the mid-range category”. Now that the proverbial heart has been electrified, will it still beat into the future?
