The Maserati MC20 looks stunning in its new commercial.

Maserati is showing off its MC20 mid-engine sports car in a new TV spot that highlights the car’s otherwordly qualities.

The MC20 will feature a twin-turbo V6 engine making 630 horsepower. That engine gets a starring role in the commercial as well. Check it out here:

This is a surprisingly effective commercial. No question, the MC20 is a handsome-looking car. But the composition of the commercial itself is what really caught our eye.

At this point, there’s not a whole lot that car commercials can do that will surprise us. They follow a pretty tried-and-true formula. Usually there are some shots of the car in question driving down city streets, often with reflective plate glass windows in the background to show the car’s reflection in profile.

If we’re lucky, the commercial might show a celebrity driving the car – say, Matthew McConaughey or Brie Larson.

There will be some shots of the interior, with the camera zooming in on the sleek infotainment system and panning across the exquisite stitching on the leather seats.

You best believe that there will be some artful panorama views of the car zipping along the Pacific Coast Highway or some similarly scenic locale. If you’re watching a Subaru commercial, you’ll see it trundling up a mountain trail. The same applies to the dearly departed Volkswagen Alltrack.

If it’s a sports car commercial, like the new Toyota Supra, expect some hairpin turns and plenty of nighttime city driving with street lights flashing over the car’s smooth hardtop.

This Maserati commercial subverts some expectations. The engine itself features in the first thirty seconds, floating high above the ground, glimmering as the sun rises.

Then the commercial shows a massive white sheet, blowing in the breeze, from which emerges the Maserati MC20. The camera glides over the smooth bodywork of the MC20’s exterior. It looks a bit like the shell of a sleek, futuristic spaceship. The pearly white paintwork further contributes to the space shuttle vibe.

Only after a minute has passed does the commercial settle into the comfortable familiarity of showing the mid-engine supercar flying around a corner on track, bathed in the glow of streetlights.

The whole package is aesthetically pleasing and really highlights the impressive new design of the MC20. It’s a much-needed dose of excitement for the Italian automaker, for which the lineup had become somewhat stale. It will be exciting to see whether the car’s performance can deliver on the promise of the advertisement.
