The Acura MDX Prototype shows off its futuristic cockpit.

Acura is making big moves lately. Honda’s luxury brand has grown stagnant over recent years, but that’s all changing.

We recently wrote about Acura’s decision to make a Type S performance variant of every single model.  That’s one way to make a splash in the luxury segment.

Another way is to redesign the interior of your flagship SUV to look like a futuristic utopia.

That’s what’s been done with the new Acura MDX Prototype. Acura teased photographs of the MDX Prototype’s interior with lighting that looked like it was ripped straight from a Nicolas Winding Refn film.

Striking lighting aside, the entire aesthetic conveys a futuristic, sci-fi vibe. It almost seems like climbing into the driver’s seat of the MDX will be a bit like strapping into the cockpit of a space shuttle.

That might be intentional. Acura is calling the driver’s display the “Acura Precision Cockpit,” per Motortrend. The infotainment system rising above the dash looks like something that might be at home in a Tesla.

The dramatic lighting in the promo shots might not be a completely accurate portrayal of how the MDX Prototype will look, but there will be accent LED lighting drawing attention to a 25-speaker audio system.

The full official reveal of the Acura MDX Prototype is scheduled for October 14, 2020. If the interior is any indication, Acura is taking a shot at the heavy hitters in the luxury car market. We’re interested to see what they do with the exterior.
