Sabine Schmitz and the Greatest Female Race Car Drivers

We lost Sabine Schmitz recently. The “Queen of the Nürburgring” passed away at the age of 51 after a battle with cancer. She was a two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and gained notoriety during her numerous appearance on “Top Gear” from her role as the “Ring Taxi” at the iconic track.

She was the fastest taxi driver in the world and a hell of a driver in any vehicle, especially a Ford van.

Schmitz was a legit driver by any measurement and to some degree she might have been the most famous female race car driver in the world, especially due to “Top Gear”. As we remember her lets keep in mind that she is a pioneer and an icon for women drivers in motor sports that future generations can look up to.

We need diversity in life and motor sports is no different. When given the same opportunities women have shown that they can compete at the highest levels of racing and institutional sexism shan’t be tolerated.

Lewis Hamilton and Bubba Wallace have been given a chance to shine in the predominately white motor sports world and that is incredible progress but we need to keep on keeping on for all people in all walks of life.
