Biggie Smalls: 1997 GMC Suburban

The Notorious B.I.G. is one of my favorite musicians. He was a great lyricist and though he had a brief career, two studio albums at the time of his death, Biggie had a large impact on hip hop and his music still resonates.

Tragically we lost Biggie on March 9,1997 in Los Angeles after he was shot multiples in a dry-by-shooting. At the time of the murder he was sitting in the front passenger seat of a 1997 GMC Suburban and to this date the murder remains unsolved.

The Suburban was owned by Biggie’s cousin at the time of the murder and after the police investigation it was sold at an auction to a car dealership in Chula Vista, CA. In October 1997 it was purchased by as a family vehicle and a the time the new owner was unaware of the vehicle’s prominence.

In 2005 the LAPD informed the Suburban’s owner the history of the vehicle and that it was needed for the murder investigation. After learning of the SUV’s notoriety it is being sold on behalf of the current owners by Moments In Time.

Moments In Time buys and sells rare autographs, documents and memorabilia. On their website they have a listing for the John Lennon’s “Double Fantasy” album that was autographed by Lennon for Mark David Chapman on the day he murdered the former Beatle.

It was previously listed at $1.5 million but now the website indicates, “Price: On Request”. The front passenger door was replaced and its bullet ridden door is in the custody of the LAPD as evidence to Biggie’s murder but one of its seat belts has a bullet hole in it.

If you want a smaller piece of Biggie’s SUV, Moments In Time is selling one of the wheels from the Suburban for $150,000.00.
