Fangio’s 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R
At the time of the sale it was the most valuable car ever sold at auction. The five-time F1 world champion’s Mercedes-Benz W196R was sold by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale in July 2013 and Fangio drove it to his second title.
It was a highly-innovative race car that introduced to F1 a fuel-injected engine, multi-tubular ‘spaceframe’ lightweight chassis, Mercedes-Benz all-independent suspension amongst other innovations.
“Mercedes has long been recognized for the world-class quality of its products and in 1954/55 they set out to rebuild their reputation for automotive excellence post-war. With this W196 and its sports car sisters they did just that… and how!” – Doug Nye, racing historian
