The Toyota Highlander is one of the best midsize SUVs on the market and has been for a while. Fortunately, it’s one of Toyota’s long-running nameplates that has managed to keep up with the times. On the contrary, take a look at the aging 4Runner and all the calls for the automaker to modernize it.

What’s perhaps most exciting about this midsize SUV is the new edition of the Grand Highlander. New for the 2024 model year, the Toyota Grand Highlander brings with it a few changes. These changes aren’t the most pronounced, but it serves as a welcomed addition for those who want a few extra features and an overall bigger SUV. Beyond those alterations, this contender for best midsize SUV is a bit of a game changer because it shows how subtle differences can almost reinvent a long-running vehicle.

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander comes in three distinct powertrains. Two of the Grand Highlander’s trims are hybrid, while only one is gas-powered. The gas-powered engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder. This engine has a maximum output of 265 horsepower and can be front or all-wheel drive. According to Toyota, it achieves 0 to 60 miles per hour in 7.5 seconds. It gets an average of 24 miles per gallon. The standard hybrid powertrain has a maximum horsepower of 245 and averages a combined 36 miles per gallon.

The most sought-after version of the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander will be the Hybrid Max trim. This one happens to be the best midsize SUV for power Toyota has ever produced. It has a maximum output of 262 horsepower. It accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 6.3 seconds. Additionally, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds and averages 27 miles per gallon. People should also note that each trim has three driving modes- Normal, Sport, and Eco.

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is also a game-changer for the nameplate because of its technology. The Highlander has a standard eight-inch touchscreen display whereas the Grand version has a 12.3-inch option as standard. Additionally, the third-row seats get USB ports, totaling seven for the vehicle. The Grand Highlander also has a standard wireless charging pad.

One of the most significant ways the Grand Highlander is a game changer is the size differences. This new version offers a decent bit more leg and headroom than the regular Highlander. Overall, the vehicle is about 6.5 inches longer, 2.3 inches wider, and 2.0 inches taller. However, both SUVs have a ground clearance of about 8.0 inches.

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander offers a bit of a refresh to an older vehicle. Sure, people can still buy the Highlander as it’s an excellent midsize SUV. However, the Grand version makes it more appealing to those who want a vehicle that’s slightly larger and that has a bit more to offer. It’s easily near the top of the list for best midsize SUV.
