MotorTrend has called the 2024 Subaru Outback the top midsize SUV. Of course, the Outback has been on the market for several years now, but later models have greatly improved. This is the best midsize SUV for quite a few reasons. It delivers solid performance, has an impressively modern interior, and has state-of-the-art safety features. Additionally, this is a solid option for off-roading. Of course, the 2023 Subaru Outback is also still an excellent option.

Here’s a look into what makes the 2024 Subaru Outback the best midsize SUV.

The 2024 Subaru Outback might be the best midsize SUV for performance

One of the reasons MotorTrend calls the 2024 Subaru Forester the best midsize SUV is its performance. This doesn’t mean it’s the most powerful, but it does mean that it offers what the publication would consider the best driving experience. It comes standard with a 2.5-liter inline-four engine that has a maximum output of 182 horsepower and a torque of 176 lb-ft. This trim accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 8.6 seconds.

The more powerful of the models uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four that makes 260 horsepower with a torque of 270 lb-ft. This powertrain comes on the XT and Wilderness trims trims. It accelerates from 0 to 60 MPH in only six seconds. The 2024 Subaru Outback also isn’t too bad when it comes to fuel economy. The less powerful version averages 26 miles per gallon in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. Of course, the more powerful versions are a tad lower.

This model uses a continuously variable transmission and comes standard as an all-wheel drive SUV. Notably, it can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Buyers should note that the 2023 Subaru Outback offers the same engine options.

The 2024 Subaru Outback has an advanced interior

This is also the best midsize SUV because it’s spacious and advanced. It offers room for up to five people, and buyers can add Nappa leather upholstery. There are also options for heated and ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. In general, the inside of the 2024 Subaru Outback looks upscale regardless of the trim buyers pick. Regarding cargo space, the SUV offers 32.6 cubic feet in the rear. You get 75.6 cubic feet with the seats folded.

This is also the best midsize SUV for interior technology. The base model has a seven-inch touchscreen, while higher trims have an 11.6-inch vertical unit. Of course, both screens work with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Many drivers will be happy to know that the 2024 Subaru Outback with the larger screen has rather sizable icons, making it easier to use. Buyers can also add built-in navigation, a WiFi hotspot, and wireless charging. The 2023 Subaru Outback is also similar in this regard.

This SUV works well for all terrains

Another reason MotorTrend may have called the 2023 Subaru Forester the best midsize SUV is because it’s great for off-roading. The vehicle offers up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance, which competes with many of the most popular off-roading focused SUVs. All trims of the SUV also come standard with X-MODE, which essentially enhances the all-wheel-drive system and provides optimal traction.

Overall, there are many reasons people could call this the best midsize SUV. It offers formidable performance, has a solid interior, and it’s great for all types of driving. Of course, the same is true for the 2023 Subaru Outback. This new model starts at $28,895.
