#23- 1953 Chevrolet Bel-Air
Appeared in: Back to the Future I
The 1953 Chevrolet Bel-Air first makes its appearance right after Marty encounters his father George McFly at Lou’s cafe. Marty follows George McFly and finds him perched atop a tree spying on Lorraine Baines which happens to be Marty’s mother in real life (except in the past.) George McFly falls out of the tree and is about to get hit by a 1953 Chevrolet Bel-Air, which Marty prevents by pushing George out of the way but gets knocked unconscious in the process. The Bel-Air happens to be owned by Sam Baines, Lorraine’s Dad.
The Chevrolet Bel Air was a full-size automobile that was produced by Chevrolet between 1950-1981. It was the predecessor to the full-size sedan we know as the Chevrolet Impala today. Revolutionary styling was the name of the game for the first generation Chevrolet Bel-Air as you can easily imagine the Bel-Air without a roof. It was styled as a convertible but it had a non-detachable roof. At an MSRP of $1,741, it certainly wasn’t all that expensive. To put that into perspective in 2015 that would be about $17,189 or the price of a basic Toyota Corolla. Depending on what engine you chose, the Chevrolet Bel-Air came with a variant of the inline straight six colloquially known as the Blue Flame in 106 HP or 115 HP variants.
