Porsche 911R: The Modern Purist Porsche
By Mike Garcia
Two: It has a naturally aspirated 4.0 liter flat-six.
Another critical component for automotive purists is linear throttle response. Porsche is using the 4.0 liter flat-six out of the GT3 RS model, which is capable of 500 horsepower and 339-lb.ft. of torque. Porsche has recently added turbo engines to their base 911 models and more recently, the 718 Boxster. While the turbo engines offer greater fuel efficiency and more punch by size of displacement, it doesn’t always offer perfectly linear throttle response. How important is linear throttle response? The engineering teams of LaFerrari, the Porsche 918 Spyder, and McLaren P1 all use hybrid systems, but essentially use the electric power to fill in any perceived gap in throttle response. The easy, simple solution? Create a well-engineered 4.0 liter flat-six. Porsche made that the heart of the 911R.
