Richard Hammond – the ex-host of Top Gear crossed paths with death again during the shoot for The Grand Tour Season 2. The Rimac Concept One supercar that he was driving spun out, flipped and burst into flames.

Richard Hammond has had his share of near-death experiences. We had covered one which involved him falling off a motorbike and hitting his head on a rock. It happened in Mozambique while filming for Amazon Prime’s The Grand Tour. But that wasn’t anywhere close to the horrifying crash that he had during his Top Gear days when he crashed a Vampire dragster. The accident went on to put him in a coma for two weeks and had lasting effects which he has to cope with even today.

The biggest news of the day is that another serious crash has been added to Richard Hammond’s list of greeting death and then walking away from it. This time it was in a Rimac Concept One all-electric car. Most of us are familiar with the machine for its Bugatti Veyron-killing drag races.

The Rimac Concept One is a proper hypercar from Croatia which has succeeded in terrorizing some of the biggest names in the high-performance carmaker circles. We never thought the £2million supercar would give Richard Hammond another nightmare to wake up from.

Jeremy Clarkson makes it a point to give an update on Twitter whenever Richard Hammond crashes. Going by Clarkson’s tone in the tweet, he too got genuinely scared.

The crash took place while the host and crew were filming in the town of St Gallen in north-east Switzerland for Amazon Prime’s The Grand Tour Season 2.  Hammond was piloting the Rimac Concept One in which he had completed the Hemberg Hill Climb a short while before things went south. On a related note, a race is scheduled to take place there on Sunday.

The Grand Tour Twitter page update on Richard Hammond’s crash has all the necessary details for fans of the host and the Amazon Prime show.

More from Cars on TV

The badass moment has to be the part where Richard Hammond climbed out of the car all by himself. The car burst into flames after the TV show host was helped off the scene. He was immediately airlifted to a hospital in St Gallen, where it was detected that he had a knee fracture.

The Mirror spoke to The Grand Tour’s executive producer Andy Wilman and he had this to say.

"Everyone is so relieved. If Richard had been a few seconds slower getting out, he would have been incinerated. I spoke to Richard at the hospital and although he was very shaken, he was conscious and quite lucid. He has had X-rays and a CT scan and is being kept in for observation by the doctors. All he said about his injuries was that his knee hurt a lot, which I’m not surprised about as it now has bolts in it and it is fractured. His only worry was about letting his wife and family know he was OK."

Rimac Automobili has tweeted on the incident, with a link leading to their latest press release.

Thankfully, no one else was injured and an investigation has commenced to find out the reasons behind the crash. We wish Hamster a speedy recovery and expect him to join the show as The Grand Tour moves to its second season.
