With the release date of Fast and Furious 9 pushed to 2020 and the spinoff movie set to arrive in 2019, not everything sounds peaceful in the franchise built on speed.

As you may have got to know by now, the first spinoff in the Fast and Furious franchise has been given a 2019 release date on the calendar. And along with it, the theatrical launch of the ninth movie in the blockbuster franchise has been delayed. Fast and Furious 9 will reach theaters on April 20, 2020 and though Universal Pictures hasn’t given an official explanation yet, there may be a handful of reasons which made the studio push the release all the way to 2020.

Anyway, the change in date hasn’t gone down well with Tyrese Gibson who plays Roman Pearce in the series. One of the cast members who supported Vin Diesel during that notorious Diesel vs The Rock feud, Gibson, voiced his opinion on Instagram, twice.

Apparently, he believes that the sequel in the main saga was delayed to accommodate the spinoff which sees Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs teaming up with Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. All attacks are directed at Dwayne Johnson and producer Hiram Garcia. Gibson adds that he and Ludacris were offered a chance to star in their very own Roman Pearce-Tej Parker spinoff – an opportunity which both actors politely declined to keep the family together.

The Fast and Furious family has to clean up the house first before moving forward and the break will give them the time to do it in an amiable manner.

While Tyrese Gibson’s reasoning may or may not be true, there are some more factors which may have decided the new release date of Fast and Furious 9. F. Gary Gray had directed the eighth instalment – The Fate of the Furious and with a global haul north of $1.2 billion, it’s one of the biggest box office blockbusters ever for Universal. However, it wasn’t as well-liked by critics and fans as its predecessors. And F. Gary Gray doesn’t seem to be that excited to take up the mantel for the ninth movie as he has other plans in mind for his career.

There are rumors of Justin Lin making a comeback to helm the series after the break he took since Furious 6. Perhaps the date was postponed to suit his schedule. Even that’s something which is yet to corroborated. It would be a cumbersome task for Lin to wrap up the new and “final” trilogy in the franchise which will conclude with Fast and Furious 10. But he won’t be one to shy away from the chair because of scope of the task. Remember, it was he who got the franchise to its present-day glory.

There are other aspects to settle in the house too. Michelle Rodriguez had threatened to quit the “family” unless female characters aren’t given as much priority in the storyline as their male counterparts. Vin Diesel did some damage control for that by extending his support. But it remains to be seen on how that is sorted out.
