Today is Throwback Thursday here at Art of Gears, the special day of the week where we have a look into the past of our chosen vehicle. This weeks throwback is the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was first revealed to the public and press in October 1965 at the London Motor Show. After seeing positive feedback from the public, the Silver Shadow was swiftly put into production from 1965 until the 1980’s with various series being released within the production period.

The Silver Shadow was different than your average vehicle in the 1960s, it offered luxury, space and handled like a dream. Various upgrades on the vehicle were also significant to create demand for the vehicle.

From 1965 to 1969/70, the Silver Shadow was fitted with a V8 6.2L engine which could accelerate to 121mph and had a 0-60mph time of 11 seconds.

The engine was then updated in the early 1970s and was replaced by a much powerful V8 6.7L engine.

However, only around 8500 Silver Shadow’s were produced which were imported around the world including the US & Germany.

When the Silver Shadow was produced, the price from Rolls Royce was around $60,000 to $70,000 in the US. However, today when looking for a Silver Shadow on the market, one can be found for under £20,000 depending on the year, mileage and condition of the vehicle.

Rolls Royce has always been with a luxury car manufacturer with the average price for a Rolls-Royce within the £100,000 to £400,000 range.

Although, the interior, engine power and handling has been improved for all newer models since the Silver Shadow, Rolls Royce has always kept the same design and body shape.

Another major significant design that has been kept the same is the logo called the Spirit Of Ecstasy created by Charles Robinson.
