Two more seats means a grown up Honda CR-V

Since the Honda was first introduced in 1997 to the US Market, it hasn’t grown all that much and has remained a solid seller for Honda for quite sometime.  According to our good friends at Digital Trends, they got the scoop from Honda’s head of cars across the pond in the UK earlier yesterday (July 7, 2015) and it looks like the next generation Honda CR-V will move from being a five seater to a seven seater.

Not to steal any thunder from one of Honda’s pillars of sales, the five-seater Fit/Jazz-based Honda HR-V has been quite a success globally and here in the United States. As such, Honda thought it was time to differentiate its Honda CR-V by classing it up a bit, most likely underpinning it with a new chassis and adding in two seats. Consider that when that the first generation Honda CR-V was only 170 inches long, 70 inches wide and 66 inches high. The latest generation Honda CR-V has grown eight inches longer, about 2 inches wider and actually shrunk by an inch in height.

Currently, the Honda CR-V competes with the Toyota Rav-4, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5, Jeep Cherokee and VW Tiguan. If Honda luxes there CR-V up a bit and makes it bigger, now you’re talking Volvo XC60 and Land Rover Discovery Sport competitor. A bold move by Honda.

With size comes the need for a bit more oomph so look for Honda to borrow heavily from the Honda Pilot. Perhaps they’ll offer the 1.6 L i-DTEC found in European markets. Sure the pokey little diesel puts out just 120 HP but more importantly 221 lbs-ft of torque, the power number that matters in a larger SUV. Whatever Honda comes out with should surely be top notch and well polished.
