Why This Model Driving An Evo Brought Out The Absolute Worst Commenters
By Paulo Acoba
The mission was to break the internet and Sky Marina Espinosa sitting behind the wheel of 600HP Evo did just that. It also brought out some of the worst comments thrown her way known to man.
Welcome to the internet Sky Espinosa. If you haven’t already seen the straight up magnum opus of a video (as far as girls shifting gears goes,) we’ve posted it below. Thanks to the RiceBox Mitsubishi Evolution in the hands of Sky Espinosa everyone witnessed her man handling more than 600 HP as she masterfully powershifted through the Evo’s gears.
After the video was uploaded to Youtube, it was shortly thereafter picked up by such big car channels like Speed Society and 1320 video. The 1320 post in a matter of hours raked up millions of views in a couple of hours as well as thousands of likes and hundreds of comments. You can guess the demographic of either of those pages (it’s a stag party but what car page isn’t?) Making your way throw the comments section of any car page online is like navigating through the a crowded subway car of Dude City where speaking the first thing that comes to mind is the name of the game and anonymity reigns king. See the owner of the Mitsubishi Evolution, from what we can gather, just wanted to make a cool video featuring his girlfriend (we think) showcasing how well she can drive a temperamental import. Along the way people would like his RiceBoxEvo page as well as Sky’s own personal page and everyone would live happily ever after. Except, that’s not how things turned out.
Comments like the ones below were upvoted and reigned supreme
- “Plenty of girls can drive stick…She is nothing special. Sorry to break it to ya.”
- “That girl can’t drive…”
- “That’s a weird looking kitchen”
- “So she can drive fast in a straight line.”
- I’m just surprised she put the correct fuel in it and not diesel
- Sorry to disappoint but any girl can drive a fast car in a straight line… I fail to see anything “sick” about this girls driving ???
So why all the hate? Two parts really. First, the male ego is extremely fragile. It’s naturally emasculating to see a women excelling at something men brag about and find natural to be masters of (driving a manual vehicle.) Especially when it comes to cars. There are few sacred spaces online and in real life where men find space and solitude away from women and that happens to be in the garage. If women do come into these spaces, they are either treated as not being as skilled as men or relegated to doing what they’re told they do best (which usually involves going back into the kitchen to fetch a sandwhich.)
The second part involves the lack of any burden of proof. If Sky had posted a montage of her building up the Mitsubishi Evolution from bare bones, testing and tuning as well as troubleshooting before she actually went for a drive, things would’ve been different. On the internet, we know nothing about you. If someone want respect, they literally have to post up your resume of what you’ve done (or at least have an Instagram full of shots showcasing your skills) to prove themselves worthy of respect. The facts are that Sky does actually wrench on her own Evo (the one in the video isn’t hers) but no one knew that, thus all the hate.
So if it’s attention and likes you wanted. Mission accomplished. If it’s respect, you’d be hardpressed to find it over social media from complete strangers. Your real friends and fans will know what’s up and at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters right?
