Skyactiv-R: Mazda Confirms Sports Car Concept Is Rotary Powered
By Paulo Acoba
Rotary fans rejoice because it looks like the sports car concept headed to the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show will have that magical spinning triangle powering it.
We hardly doubted the fact that Mazda wouldn’t stuff anything but one of their iconic rotaries into the engine bay of that Sports Car Concept they’ve silently been hyping up. But earlier today, (Oct. 27, 2015) AutoCar themselves got official word from Kiyoshi Fujiwara, Head of R&D for Mazda on the cusp of the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, that the Mazda Sports Car Concept will be rotary powered.
"“People think rotary can not meet modern Eco demands. The SkyActiv engineers worked on rotary and have it cutting edge tech. It is an essential part of our DNA and it just be passed onto future engineers. It is synonymous with the brand. Some time in the future it will return and be called SkyActiv-R”"
It doesn’t take a scientist to figure out what R stands for and we’re excited to find out what exactly Mazda R&D has been cooking up. This all backs up previous information on the lineup of cars Mazda wanted to bring to the Motor Show; a 967 Mazda Cosmo Sport 110s amongst them which happens to be Mazda’s first Rotary.
It’s already been revealed that Mazda has a dedicated set number of engineers working on Rotary technology, trying their darndest to not only meet but exceed power and fuel efficiency of regular internal combustion engines.
The 2015 Tokyo Motor Show kicks off this Friday, the 30th and goes for a full week ending on November 8. Further information on what the Mazda Sports Concept entails will happen tomorrow the 28th at 8:30 A.M.
