If this Manila resident’s idea actually went through, you’d only be allowed to drive your car two dasy a week depending on whether you owned a Toyota, Honda, Ford etc.

According to a recent study by Waze (that favorite traffic app that shows where exactly all the cops are) Manila Philippines has some of the worst traffic on planet earth. With a population that takes traffic laws as a suggestion rather than a law, has way too many cars than the road infrastructure can handle and a growing population of new car owners, it’s no surprise that you can get stuck for hours on a simple everyday commute.

It also doesn’t help that you can pay off cops for far less than the cost of a ticket if the price is right.  According to Top Gear PH, there’s also a surprisingly simple solution that was put forth that very well might’ve solved Manila’s traffic woes.

According to a video by GMA’s State of the Nation, a retired overseas Filipino worker proposed that from 6AM-6AM everyday, rules governing who could drive would be imposed.

* Monday – Toyota

* Tuesday – Mitsubishi

* Wednesday – Honda

* Thursday – Isuzu, Nissan

* Friday – Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki

* Saturday – American, European, Korean and Chinese cars

* Sunday – Free

That means, for example if you drove a Honda Civic, you could only drive on Wednesday and Sunday.

You won’t be surprised to know that this idea was immediately shot down by the fact that different cars makes and models have varying levels of units going around the Islands. Bold suggestion and technically would relieve traffic, but not feasible.

The Philippines might take a lesson from Singapore and raise taxes on vehicle ownership and overhaul their police force to enforce traffic rules or else risk losing their jobs.
