A young car enthusiast may surround his or herself with plenty of car magazines, drooling over each design of Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche. That’s how it was in the 1980’s. While the elite supercar companies have changed into Pagani, Koenigsegg, and Bugatti, there are always sports cars that are far more attainable. I drowned myself in Ferrari design books back then, and one of my favorite cars that felt just as cool as a Ferrari, was the Toyota Supra.
No, this isn’t the most loved Toyota Supra of enthusiast and drag-racing dreams. This is the one just before it, the one that started from the late 1980’s. This turned sports car driving into a luxurious, grand touring experience as well.
Toyota went with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine, capable of 200 horsepower and 188-lb.ft. of torque. This allowed for a more linear throttle response than the expected lag from the 3S-GTE motor from the Celica All-Trac. Along with smooth throttle response, the car came equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional 4-speed automatic with overdrive. The 1991 model was at the tail end of the product cycle for its’ generation, but it brought a level of pleasure and relaxation to the sports car minded automotive enthusiast. Optional removable T-Tops helped enhance the experience.
