We race the Baldwin Motorsports Monster Energy Trophy Truck in Forza Horizon 3 and find our new favorite vehicle to explore the Outback.

The 49th Annual SCORE Baja 1000 went down earlier this month, and I have to admit, we caught a little bit of Baja fever here at Art of Gears.

We were live tracking the race and had the Baja Weatherman radio station streaming the entire time, obsessively hitting the refresh button if we lost the stream.

For an endurance race that can take racers anywhere between 17-36 hours, many people would probably think we were crazy when we would get upset that we lost connection at mile marker 123 of an 840-mile race, but that is just Baja. It has a way of captivating you from start to finish, even if you are not there in person.

So what do you do when you can’t be there to race the Baja 1000 yourself but still want to get a feel for what it’s like to race an 800hp Trophy Truck? Fire up the Xbox One and jump into a little Forza Horizon 3, that’s what!

Now we know Horizon 3 takes places in Australia, but as far as next gen video games go, jumping into the Trophy Truck and taking it off-road in this game is about as close as you are going to get to the offroad conditions of Baja California, Mexico.

And a funny thing happened while we were taking this truck for a spin. We found out that not only is this truck a blast to drive through the Outback, but in online races, the truck is no slouch, either!

With the right setup, we were consistently placing in the top 5 in many of the races we entered.

We also found that the Trophy Truck in Forza Horizon 3 is one of the best vehicles to show off the level of detail that this video game really has.

Every camera angle you switch to when running this truck is fantastic. From racing using the wide angle so you can see the entire vehicle on your screen, to the driver’s cockpit view, the Trophy Truck makes you “feel” like you are actually racing offroad.

Besides throwing on a pair VR goggles, it is about as close as you can come to offroad racing in real life. Here is a quick video of one of the cross country races we ran the Baldwin Motorsports Trophy Truck in.

This is a video of the same race, but with the different replay camera angles. From the cool refreshing waterfall to the level of detail they put into the suspension travel that the truck displays as you race through the uneven terrain, Forza Horizon 3 graphics are truly stunning.

So what is your favorite vehicle right now in Forza Horizon 3? Have you tried a race yet in the Baldwin Motorsports Trophy Truck? We are going to be reviewing a number different “virtual” vehicles next month so if there is a car or truck setup you want to see us race, let us know.
