We take a look at the Mazda MX-5 RF and try to figure out why this convertible hard top is getting some negative press even when the car is completely sold out.

There are a lot of new production model vehicles I am excited to get a look at in person for 2017. One of those vehicles is the new 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF.

And it looks like I am not the only one excited to get my hands on an RF next year. Mazda’s hard-top convertible allocations are already sold out.

So why is it when I search the message boards and even a couple big name automotive blogs, I keep seeing headlines that say the MX-5 RF “Has Got Its Priorities Very Wrong,” or that the RF is “Not A Real Miata.” What priorities are they speaking of?

It’s a Miata with an electric hard top, does it really need to get any more complicated than that? Yes, it breaks the mold by ditching the soft top, and yes the price has increased a little bit because of it, but for people that are questioning why the hard top, who do they think the target market is for this little sports car, anyway?

I still enjoy seeing Miata’s on the road today. And I could honestly see a lot of real world applications that I would use this car for, especially with that hard top, if I had this car in my collection.

For example, the RF’s hard top would be a perfect fit for my long cruises out here in SoCal, and let me explain why. I enjoy my Friday, end of the work week drives.

Getting the chance to take off a little early on a Friday and plan a drive, whether it be up PCH or just to find a new hole in the wall Fish Taco Shop is always a great way to end the work week.

But more often than not, I find myself driving a little further up the coast than I had planned, just enjoying the drive (which is not such a bad thing, right?).

So when the sun goes down, I would love to have the ability to hit that electric button on the way back and make a B-line for the freeway to enjoy the drive back without all that wind noise.

I like what the MX-5 RF brings to the table and if I could pick any reasonably priced convertible sports car I would have a hard time not picking this one to add to my garage.

But what are your thoughts on the new 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF? Let us know what you think @ArtofGears.
